Overview
Network users: Follow these instructions to install Storm into a shared Network folder. This installation should normally be done from a work station unless the server also needs to run Storm. For further information, and details on how to install only system files on work stations, consult the section on Network Installation.
Two installation programs are available:
Program Installation Installs the program files necessary to run Storm AND the necessary system, run time, and resource files needed to run all Binx 32 bit programs. This installation is done from either
If done from a server keep in mind that system files will be installed on the server…something that is not necessary unless you also use the server as a work station. | |||||
| System File Installation Installs only the system, run time, and resource files needed to run Storm. This installation is usually done on work stations that will access Storm program and data files from a network server or another computer. |
Storm 6 uses the familiar Install Shield program to install its files onto your computer. The install program installs several "groups" of files onto your computer:
Program Files are copied to the "Storm6" sub folder, which is created under the installation folder chosen during the installation process (Default is Binx.)
| System Files are copied to your Windows System Folder. | |
| Common Files, which are used by other Binx 32 bit programs, are installed to the "Common32" sub folder, which is created under the installation folder chosen during the installation process (Default is Binx.) | |
| Borland Database Engine Files (BDE) will be copied to the Program Files\Common Files\Borland Folder. If you already have a program that uses the BDE, these files will only be installed if your version of the BDE is older than the 32 bit BDE version 5.11 used by Storm 6. | |
| Registry Entries For Binx, run time, and the BDE. |
Shown below is a diagram of folders created when running Program Files Setup (Normally done from a work station to a shared/mapped folder on a server...or to a standalone work station in a non-networked implementation of Storm.)

Shown below is a diagram of folders created when running the "System Files" setup (Normally done on a work station that needs to access the Storm program over the network.) In this case, shortcuts to the storm EXE files must be created manually.

Program Files Installation
A few moments after the downloaded file is run and the setup
files are extracted the opening window should appear. After reading the message, click the "next" button.
Now you can choose the folder where you wish to install Storm 6. It defaults to your C: drive, in the Binx folder. If you'd like to choose a different Install folder, click the "Browse" Button.
Please be aware that the following folders will be created and populated under the installation folder you choose: Storm6, Storm6\Stormprocs, and Common32. (see the diagram above)
From this window you can either key in the desired folder location, or point and click to choose a folder then click the OK button.
If you're installing to a network, you can enter any valid network drive here.
Keep in mind that you only need to install the program files one time. On all other work stations you should run the "System Files" installation. Unlike past versions of Storm, you no longer need to run Storm from the same mapped drive letter. Instead, you will choose a data folder and create an "alias" from each work station that points to the proper folder.
The network folders to which the Storm program and data files are installed must have the "Change" level security level set for all Storm users (or the equivalent permission in non-Microsoft networks.)
After choosing the directory, click the OK button. If you've chosen a folder that does not exist you'll get a warning message:

If this is the proper directory, click "yes" to continue, and then click the "next" button.
Next, you will be asked to choose the "program" folder where the Storm 6 program icons will be located. It defaults to "Binx". After you've made your selection, click the "next" button.
Now the install program lets you review your choices. If all is OK, click the "next" button to begin the Install process. Otherwise, click the "Back" button to make changes.
Once the install program completes, you may need to restart your computer. If the setup program does not call for a restart, you may run Storm Immediately. In a networked installation you may wish to install system files on your work stations first.
Network Installation
If you plan to use Storm on a Network, first use the procedure above to install Storm from a work station to a shared/mapped network drive. Once that is complete the computer used to install the program is ready to go.
Next run the System Files install program from each workstation.
(Download StormSysfiles.exe with the link at the top of this page.) The installation of System files is similar to the procedure outlined above except you do not get a choice of where to install the system files.
Once the system file installation is complete and the work station is restarted (if necessary,) you must manually create icons to the files
"storm6.exe" and "Storm AutoFunctions.exe" which are both located in the Storm6 folder on the server to which the Storm program files were installed.
Uninstalling
To uninstall Storm, Open your computer's Control Panel, double-Click on the
"Add/Remove Programs" icon, choose "Storm 6" from the
program list, then choose uninstall. If you installed all Storm files,
this will remove Storm program, runtime, and Borland Database Engine runtime
files from your system. If you installed system files only, the runtime
and BDE files will be removed. Your data files will remain on your system and
must be removed manually.
If you have another program that uses the Borland Database Engine, you should
answer “NO” when asked if you want to remove these files.

Beginning with Storm 6, users are required to define a location for database tables from each work station. This feature means that you no longer need to have each work station looking at the same drive letter. The database tables must still be in the same physical location but one user can look at the data on a drive mapped as F: while another,
such as a server or server/work station might have the data on the C: drive.
The work station keeps track of the database table location using what's called a "Database Alias," a feature of the "Borland Database Engine"
(BDE.)
The network location to which Storm and its
database tables are installed must grant "Change" authority (or the
equivalent non-Microsoft network authority) to all Storm users.
Choosing a Database Location When You First Run Storm
The setup program does not copy database tables to your computer or network. Instead, the first time you run Storm, the system will detect there are no tables present. If this is the first time you've run Storm, you'll be asked if you are upgrading from a previous version.
If you answer "yes" you'll be given a chance to import data from a previous version of Storm For Windows.

If you answer "yes" you'll see a message saying you must first define the location where you wish to store your new data tables.
If you are NOT upgrading from a previous version, or you answer "no" to the import question above, OR it's the first time you've run Storm from a particular machine, you will be notified that the database "Alias" for Storm has not yet been defined on your machine.

Clicking OK allows you to navigate to the folder where you wish to store Storm Data. It will default to the installation folder. If this will be a network installation, be sure to choose a folder that is accessible by others who will use Storm.
If the folder you choose does not already contain Storm data
tables a set of empty database tables will be created in the location you chose.

Once you've advanced this far you can use the "on
line" help system to assist you in getting started with Storm. Simply
press the F1 key from any point in the program for information on the area of
Storm on which you are working.

While you are certainly not required to register your
program, the restrictions place on the evaluation version essentially make the program
worthless for practical use.
If you decide you would like to purchase the program click on the Order Form link.
