Copy Genie beats the heck
out of using a word processor to write copy. Copy Genie is the writing tool designed for broadcasters.
You can write, categorize and archive all sorts of copy. It even shows you the estimated
air time as you write! There are buttons to automatically include
audio/video information, camera information, anchor information and more.
You can add comments without effecting the total estimated air time just by
including comments within (parentheses.) Once your copy is written you can
easily E-Mail it to a client for approval, include it in a newscast or even use
the optional FTP tool to post it to the web! Click here to download Copy Genie.
Copy Genie also comes with two other great
tools: The Binx Timer; an on-screen count-up or count-down timer, and the
Binx Time Calculator; a calculator that performs time and date
calculations. (See screen shots below)
Looking for a way to write and build newscasts? Copy
Genie can do that, too! No, we don't "do" wire service imports,
but for the hundreds of radio stations and even low-power and small market TV
stations that do local news without the benefit of a
newsroom software package, Copy Genie is an affordable alternative. Write and file
your stories one at a time, then build your newscast by combining the individual
stories into a newscast.
As you add a story to the newscast, you get an instant indicator of the estimated
air time. When you're done building, our new Director's rundown shows a
useful summary of each story in the newscast.
In addition, you can assign a theme and category to each piece of
copy. This tool allows you to store your copy in one or more archive files so you
can retrieve it later. You can even share your archive files with other users,
making this a truly unique resource.
Continuity departments at radio and TV stations can use Copy
Genie to write and archive advertising copy. The archive feature even
allows you to easily swap copy ideas between stations in a group.
Check out the actual screen samples below, then click at the top of
this page to download the sample version of Copy Genie for a closer look at how the program
can make your writing chores easier.

When you write advertising copy there are always a few clients that must have their say before a spot gets on the air. With Copy Genie's new E-Mail tool you no longer have to cut and paste from word processor to E-Mail, or "include" a file attachment. Simply press a button, enter the E-Mail address, and your copy is on its way to the client. You can even send an audio cut along with the copy, if you have attached audio to the database record. See screen shots below to see how easy it is to use this valuable tool that's included with Copy Genie at no extra charge!.

Lots of stations have local news and sports
information on their web sites. The old way of getting news copy on the
web was to cut and paste from your word processor into your HTML editor - or
even re-type the entire newscast manually before posting. With Copy
Genie, you can assemble your newscast just as you do for printing (see
below) but instead of sending it to the printer you can send it to the
web! The Copy Genie FTP tool is more than just something that
uploads. It will automatically convert your new copy into web-ready HTML
code, include your station's graphic at the top of the page, strip all comments
and audio/video indicators from the copy, and remove any blank lines from the
copy. You can choose the font face and size and define a title for the
page. You can also define your own file name or use Copy Genie's
automatic file naming routine to generate a file name based on time, date, or
both. If you'd rather have a text file than HTML, Copy Genie can do
that, too. (See screen shots below.)
We realize that not everybody needs this functionality so
rather than hiking our price for everyone we've made the FTP tool an add-on
available for separate purchase.
The FTP tool was an add-on to Copy Genie 4 and earlier,
but it's included with Copy Genie 5 at no extra charge.

The Copy Genie main screen shows all your "on file" copy at a glance. You can sort the list by Title, Author, Last Update, Start Date , Sponsor and Theme. In addition, you can set set a filter to show only copy that matches desired dates or key words. By highlighting multiple slugs from this screen you can build a quick newscast or quickly print/FTP multiple pieces of copy in one action. For more elaborate story grouping, there is a "Print/FTP Group" feature that allows you to select and order stories into a group, then save that group for later recall. The toolbar at the top of each window allows you to quickly access the most-used features.

By clicking on the "Play Audio" tool button from the Main Screen or the Entry screen, you can add/update and play audio. If desired you can then store the audio cut within the Copy Genie Database. This way, the audio cut is always available...even if the original hard copy of the file disappears from your computer system. Once an audio cut is attached to a data record it can also be attached to an e-mail message. (See the Copy Approval screen below)

The entry screen lets you write and edit your copy. The estimated air time automatically calculates as you type! There are even functions to include remarks that don't count in the air time, and to insert Video and Audio information which will be included in air time. In addition, Camera and Graphics information and can be included and will appear on the Director's rundown. The only "required" fields are Title/Slug, Copy Type and the actual text. You can fill in the other fields if you desire to make it easier to find this piece of copy in the future!

Just a click of the tool bar button from either the main or entry windows calls up this E-Mail window. Once you fill in the "constant" options such as E-Mail server, subject and the checkbox options you never have to worry about them again. The greeting shown above appears at the top of the E-Mail message, followed by any of the check box options you choose, and your copy and optionally your attached audio cut is automatically inserted. Then it's just a matter of entering the E-Mail addresses and clicking the "Send" button. In addition you can look up E-Mail addresses by Name or Address.

There are actually two windows for FTP
publishing. This window stores information about how you want your FTP
file to be generated. You can choose standard internet HTML formatting
(which includes script to be sure the page is refreshed each time a user visits
your web site) or standard ASCII text formatting.
There are several other formatting options to choose from,
including automatic removal of comments and blank lines, font name and size,
page title and even an image source so your station's logo appears at the top of
your published page. In addition, if you want to keep an on-line archive
of newscasts you can have Copy Genie automatically generate a file name
based on time, date, or both. This option is good if you have a script
running on your web server that expects new files with a particular naming
pattern.

The second FTP window gives you choices about how and where to publish. There are three different publishing methods available so you may publish to virtually any FTP server. The internal FTP publisher has been improved since Storm 5 and works with most servers, including Clear Channel Communications servers. But just in case you can choose to publish with the popular WS FTP program or by the standard Windows FTP publishing tool.

New to Copy Genie, the director's rundown shows a summary of all copy when more than one piece of copy is printed at any one time. Included is the Slug Name, Initial anchor name, Initial camera shot, All graphical and Video/Audio source information, and even a back time column that can count down from the total newscast time to zero, or count up from zero to the total newscast time.

![]()
If you use Copy Genie to print or publish newscasts to the web, the "Print/FTP Group" function allows you to choose which copy to include in the newscast and the order in which it appears. As you add and remove stories from the group, the total estimated air time is automatically updated. Once your selections are complete you can even save the grouping for later recall. If you purchased the optional FTP add-on, you can use this same window to choose a series of stories to publish.
